level 1Understanding Your Project

Development environment

also: dev environment, local environment, dev env, local dev

The environment where you build and try out changes, usually on your own computer. It's meant to be kept separate from real users and their data.

a bit more technical

The setup where developers write and run code, typically a local machine running the app in development mode with test data and debugging tools. It should mirror production closely enough to catch problems early.

picture it

It's your home kitchen while you test a new dish for your restaurant. You can burn a few batches without any customer noticing.

why it matters

It's the safe place for your agent to experiment. Knowing that "it works on localhost" means it works in development, not for users, keeps you from announcing a feature too early.

what your agent might say
agent
The dev server is running at http://localhost:3000. It's using the test database, so feel free to create and delete bookings.
how you might use it
you → your agent
Set up the development environment so it uses fake test data and never connects to the real customer database.
common mistake

Thinking "it works on my machine" means it works for everyone. Production can have different settings, data and versions.
