level 1Understanding Your Project

Build

also: builds, build step, build process

The step that turns your project's code into the finished version that can actually run for users. It also catches some mistakes along the way.

a bit more technical

An automated process that transforms source code into runnable output, for example by compiling, bundling files, optimizing images and checking types. If the build fails, the app can't be deployed. Commands like npm run build start it.

picture it

A build is like a print shop preparing a book. The manuscript gets laid out, checked and printed into something readers can use. If a page is missing, the presses stop.

why it matters

"The build failed" is one of the most common things agents report. It means the project couldn't be turned into a working version, so nothing new can go live until it's fixed.

what your agent might say
agent
The build is failing on a type error in Checkout.tsx. It works in dev mode, but the production build is stricter. I'll fix the type.
how you might use it
you → your agent
Run the build after your changes and confirm it passes before you tell me the work is done.
common mistake

Thinking that if the app works on your screen, the build will pass. The build often checks more strictly than trying the app locally.
