Software

The instructions that tell a computer or phone what to do. Apps, websites and games are all software.

a bit more technical

Programs and the data they use, running on physical hardware. Software ranges from operating systems like Windows and iOS to the apps, websites and tools built on top of them.

picture it

A piano is the hardware. The sheet music is the software. The same piano plays completely different songs depending on which sheet music you put in front of it.

why it matters

Everything you build with an agent is software. Knowing it is just written instructions, which can be read, questioned, changed and fixed, makes the rest of this vocabulary far less mysterious.

what your agent might say
agent
I've set up the basic structure for your software. Next I'll add the screen where users log their workouts.
how you might use it
you → your agent
I want to build software that reminds our volunteers about their shifts. Before writing anything, suggest the simplest version we could start with.
common mistake

Thinking software only means big programs you install. A small website, a phone app, or a script that renames photos are all software too.
