Regression

also: regressions, regressed

When something that used to work gets broken by a newer change.

a bit more technical

A defect where previously correct behavior stops working after a code or configuration change, usually in a part of the app the change wasn't meant to touch.

picture it

You fix a squeaky door hinge, and now the door won't lock. The lock worked yesterday. Your fix broke it.

why it matters

Agents change many files at once. A fix in one place can quietly break another. Asking for regression checks is how you catch that before your users do.

what your agent might say
agent
Adding Google Sign-In caused a regression: the regular email login now fails. I'll fix that and check both ways of logging in work.
how you might use it
you → your agent
After adding Google Sign-In, test the existing email login flow for regressions before you tell me it's done.
common mistake

Thinking a regression is any bug. It's specifically something that worked before and broke because of a change.
