level 2Bugs & Debugging

Error

also: errors, error message, error messages

A message or signal that something went wrong and the app couldn't do what was asked.

a bit more technical

A reported failure: the program detected that it couldn't complete an operation. Errors can come from bugs in the code, but also from outside causes such as bad user input, network failures, expired keys, or a service being down.

picture it

An ATM screen saying "Transaction declined." Something stopped your request. It might be the machine, the bank, or your balance. The message tells you it failed, not always why.

why it matters

The exact error text is gold for an agent. "It's broken" gives it nothing. "Error: Stripe key not found" often points straight to the fix.

what your agent might say

The error 'relation users does not exist' means the users table was never created in this database. The setup script didn't run on this environment.
how you might use it
you → your agent
I'm getting this error when I start the app locally: 'Port 3000 is already in use.' Explain what it means in plain English, then fix it.
common mistake

Thinking error and bug mean the same thing. A bug is a mistake in the code. An error is a report that something failed, and the cause might not be a bug at all.
