Column

also: columns

One kind of detail that every item in a table has, like "email" or "price". It runs down the table, with one value per item.

a bit more technical

A named, typed attribute defined on a table, such as email (text) or price (decimal). Every row has a value, or null, for each column. Columns can carry constraints like NOT NULL or UNIQUE, and can be indexed.

picture it

A heading in a spreadsheet, like "Phone number". Everything underneath it is a phone number, one per line.

why it matters

New features often mean new columns. Knowing the word helps you ask the right question: is this a new column on an existing table, or a new table? It also helps you notice when an agent renames or removes one.

what your agent might say

I'll add a discount_code column to orders and allow it to be empty, so existing orders don't need a value.
how you might use it

Add a column to store each subscriber's preferred send time. Before you apply it, tell me what existing subscribers will get as a default.
common mistake

Assuming renaming a column is harmless. Any code, report or integration that uses the old name can break.
